What is CPE?
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is experiential education for theologically trained interns. Designed to prepare interns for chaplaincy.
Two dominant models currently exist: the traditional model and the hybrid model.
- The Traditional Model, where both a didactic and clinical education are provided in one location
Hybrid Model – didactic is virtual (online) and clinical is local
This experience consists of four units (400 hrs each) Total 1600 hours
There are two accredited providers – ACPE and ICPT
The Association for Clinical Pastoral (ACPE) – Accredited by the US Dept of Educ
Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT)- accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET). A subsidiary of the USDE.
Both lead to board certification as a chaplain. Most commonly known certification is by the Board of Chaplain Certification (BCCI).
Why is CPE Important?
Clinical Pastoral Education is important because it transforms theoretical faith and theology into practical empathetic care. By placing interns in real-life crisis settings—such as hospitals and hospices—under professional supervision, CPE builds deep self-awareness, crisis intervention skills, and the ability to comfort people from diverse backgrounds.
How can You Help?
Chaplains are the primary providers of spiritual care. Spiritual Care has been demonstrated to be an important part of complete healthcare. Without professional chaplains, medical providers cannot provide complete healthcare. Moreover, chaplains can work effectively with the emotional and mental components of healing. These are important components to well-being. Both hospital and hospice accrediting agencies strongly encourage the presence of professional chaplains as adjunct medical providers.
Currently, no professional chaplains in Puerto Rico are accredited by the Board of Chaplain Certification. Your help can change this important void in medical care.
